Africa holds 25% of the world's plant diversity, yet genomic research on its indigenous crops remains limited. Over the last two decades, genomics efforts in Africa have largely centered on human health, with plant genomics often under-represented or overlooked, a phenomenon known as 'plant blindness.' Additionally, much of the research on African plants is conducted and funded off the continent, resulting in projects that fail to align with Africa's research and development needs. To address this, a critical mass of African organizations and researchers must collaborate to drive a unified genomics agenda for the continent. In response to this need, African scientists have organized a 2-day symposium in Nairobi, Kenya, which will bring together about 100 delegates from academia, industry, government, and civic society. This event will highlight the progress of plant genomics in Africa, foster a network among key stakeholders, and mark the launch of the Africa Plant Genomics Society.
